herself up to sitting, wincing as her hips protested the movement.

Gary put the bowls aside. "Need a hand?"

"No! No, I just need a few minutes, that's all. I can handle going

to the bathroom by myself, it just takes me a few minutes, alright?"

"My apologies. Just let me know if I can do anything."

Groaning, Sunny managed to get to her feet, then stumbled as

another twinge of pain nearly took one leg out from under her. Gary

caught her before she landed in his lap, but he found himself with both

hands on her posterior.

"Whoop! Sorry. Didn't mean to..."

"Quite alright," said Sunny, starting across the floor to the

bathroom.

By the time she was finished and had washed her hands, Gary had

moved to the table and was waiting patiently for her to return. A

place setting was laid out for her, with cooling noodles flanked by

fork, chopsticks, and a glass of water. A bottle of wine stood off to

one side, with two juice glasses from the tableware set.

"You certainly are persistent," she said.

"Tenacity has served me well."

Sunny sat and picked up the chopsticks. They weren't the

disposable bamboo kind that you found at most restaurants. Instead,

these looked like plastic, inscribed with red Chinese characters. She

tried to get them arranged in her hand, but they wouldn't stay where

they belonged.

"Want me to show you how to use them?" said Gary.

"I know how to use chopsticks, Gary," she snapped. "I just woke

up and my hands aren't working right yet, okay?" She put the

chopsticks down and picked up the fork.

"Sorry."

"Dammit, will you stop apologizing? I know that dealing with

someone like me is way out of your comfort zone. I accept that.

Any mistakes you make are pre-forgiven, okay?"

"That's generous of you. Thank you."

"Jesus." Sunny twirled some noodles on her fork and speared a

chunk of meat. The food was quite good, and chewing helped her
